On Monday Matt Walker will swing his car into the County Ground and start his first day as Sussex head coach. Will he feel nervous and overwhelmed, like Andy Sachs when she started working for the intimidating Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada?

Probably not. Ok, he will have to sort out where to park his car and crack the wifi code, where to get a cup of tea and how to locate the nearest gents. But Walker’s busy mind has doubtless been working on the job ever since he was appointed more than three months ago, even though he was still Warwickshire’s batting coach at the time.

He will already have a detailed knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of his playing staff, assuaging any doubts by plundering the brains of his friend and predecessor, Paul Farbrace.
