The players had a get-together on the outfield on Monday, and after two wins in the Championship they have lots to celebrate.

Jack Leaning might be the last big signing Sussex make for a few years, given the club’s financial difficulties. At least it was a good one.

Leaning, 32, who signed a three-year contract in October, was the star turn with an unbeaten 120 when Sussex beat a formidable Warwickshire team by five wickets at Hove in the County Championship on Monday.

When it was all over the players held a picnic party. They pulled some nearby deckchairs into a circle in the outfield and chomped away at the lunches they had carried out from the pavilion.

For the next three hours or so they talked and laughed, these new colleagues and friends, toasting each other’s successes and displaying their huge team spirit after terrific wins from their first two matches, the only side in the Rothesay County Championship to have enjoyed such a start - nine of the 18 counties haven’t had one win yet.
