Tony Buss, who has died six days after his 87th birthday, was one of the finest fast-medium bowlers produced by Sussex since the Second World War.
It was his misfortune to be overshadowed by two outstanding opening bowlers who would go on to play for England. First came the tireless Ian Thomson, ten years his senior, who was well established in the Sussex side before Buss joined the club. Then came John Snow, two years his junior, who would become one of England’s greatest fast bowlers.
Tony played for the county between 1958-74 and took 958 first-class wickets at 25.04. Three times, between 1965-67, he took 100 wickets in a season and is the last Sussex bowler to perform the feat.
