It's captain Carson - could he be Sussex's long-term leader?

Paul Farbrace has no qualms about giving the 25-year-old the opportunity to skipper the side in the One Day Cup.

Of all three captains – four if you count club captain John Simpson – who will lead Sussex this season the one with the least experience has probably got the toughest job.

But director of cricket Paul Farbrace believes Jack Carson will take the first step this summer to eventually becoming Sussex’s skipper across all formats as he skippers a young side in the 50 overs competition.

Since coming to the club Farbrace has never hidden his belief that the Metro Bank One Day Cup should be a development competition.

Of course, he wants Sussex to win but in the last three years the emphasis has been on giving opportunities to players on the fringes. Farbrace even took a back seat himself last season so that batting coach Grant Flower could take the coaching reins. Sussex haven’t used an overseas player in the competition since 2023 – not that there would be the money to fund one this season even if they wanted to.
