Sussex have made a happy habit of finding crucial contributions from their lower order in the last couple of years and the latest example of it has put them in a strong position to start the County Championship season with a win.
At Grace Road on Sunday, the last five wickets put on 177 with nightwatchman Jack Carson (85) and Tom Price (73) leading the way. Set 481 to win, Leicestershire were 125-5 at stumps, Carson having embellished a fine day with a run out from long leg and the wicket of skipper Ian Holland.
The game wasn’t quite in the balance again when the fifth Sussex wicket went down this morning. The lead was 293 at that stage but when John Simpson departed for the addition of five more runs to leave Sussex 182-6, the home side would have fancied their chances of keeping their victory target to around 350 with the best part of five sessions to get the runs.
Instead, calmly at first before they accelerated in the afternoon session, Carson and Price put the game beyond Leicestershire with a partnership of 119, although Carson admitted afterwards that he never felt at his fluent best.
