You would have got long odds at the start of the season that Sussex’s top four for the penultimate home game of the Championship campaign would comprise George Thomas, Tom Haines, Charlie Tear and Oli Carter.
Back in April only Haines would have been fairly certain that by September he would still be opening the batting, barring injury.
Instead, it is Tom Clark - whose summer has been ruined by knee problems - and Dan Hughes - who may have played his last game for the county - whose absence have forced Sussex to rebuild their top four for the last three games.
They have been able to do so safe in the knowledge that last week’s win at Chelmsford has removed any worries they might have had about being dragged into the relegation battle.
