It might have been the wind, which felt as though it came straight from the Polar Plateau, that drove the spectators from the County Ground in the final session of play on Saturday.

Or it might have been the increasingly unpromising match situation, which saw Warwickshire end the second day of their County Championship match 217 runs ahead of Sussex with five wickets in hand.

Those of us who have been watching cricket at Hove in recent years, however, know that the pitch here is a contrary one. Instead of deteriorating it can flatten out on the final day or two.

Certainly Director of Cricket Paul Farbrace has not given up on his side’s chances of winning their opening home game of the season, following their emphatic 222-runs win in Leicester in their opening game.
