The death of Tony Pigott, aged 67, following a heart attack in January, upset everyone connected with Sussex and I was reminded of just how deep the cut went when I spoke with former captain Chris Adams.

Adams is the most successful captain in the county’s history, leading them to their only three County Championship titles (in the space of five years), their first one-day trophy in 20 years, two promotions in the one-day league and a first appearance in the Twenty20 finals.

He was an aggressive, combative leader – but he was a man close to tears when we spoke about ‘Lester’ recently. The spectre of Pigott will hang over the club’s AGM on March 24, an admonishing ghost castigating those responsible for the financial malaise that has held Hove in its damp grip in recent weeks.

Pigott died just as news of his beloved club’s difficulties became known, and Adams told me: “Lester was a transformative type of guy, and transformation is what we need right now.
