Mark Robinson, the head coach who presided over the golden age of Sussex cricket, has embarked on a role which could be even more significant for the future of the club.
Twenty years after guiding Sussex to a County Championship and C&G Trophy double in his first season in charge at Hove, Robinson is spearheading the drive to revolutionise cricket in state schools in the county. And he says Sussex are leading the way in what is a national campaign.
His appointment as the club’s State School Technical Lead will see him working alongside Gary Wallis-Tayler, the club’s Community Cricket Director, to widen and strengthen the involvement of boys and girls in the game. He is combining that with his role as Director of Cricket at the club’s official state school partner, Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) in Falmer.
Robinson says: “The dream is to have 11-year-old kids coming here for their education, with four cricket sessions around their academic lessons in the week, if they’re part of the junior programme, and then walking over the road to Sussex University, which is on the same site, and have their cricket looked after there as well.
