No one accused Bob Warren of taking his eye off the financial ball when he was chairman of Sussex for five years from 2017 until 2021.

And Warren’s predecessor Jim May, who took over at the time of the financial crash in 2008, was a former banker and club treasurer who could be relied upon to keep the books balanced as best he could.

But there are questions being asked about the rigour of the recent administration, especially Jon Filby, who took over from Warren in 2022 and who resigned last month after 36 ex-players, administrators and sponsors called for the board to “resign in full” after the club announced an operating loss of £1.33m. The ECB have issued a number of sanctions including a 12-point deduction when the Championship season starts on 3 April.

Some of those questions are coming from Warren, the founder and chairman of Travel Places, a sports travel business based in Worthing employing almost 100 people and with a multi-million pound turnover.
