It’s not officially Sussex day until Tuesday but those of us who were at the County Ground on Saturday were quite happy to start the celebrations a bit early.
A magnificent unbeaten 224 by James Coles has put Sussex in a position where they should beat Glamorgan and claim a fourth Championship win of the season. Depending on other results it might even lift them to the top of Division One by the time Sussex Day dawns and while no one is getting ahead of themselves, least of all Coles, these are exciting times for the county.
Of course, discussion about Sussex’s present and future inevitably involves referring to the financial issues, so it was just as gratifying after watching Coles take Glamorgan’s attack apart to hear him reiterate his long-term commitment to the club.
