'My best memory is of playing alongside him when we won the Championship for the first time...'

In the week James Kirtley left Sussex Paul Weaver catches up with Jason Lewry, the other half of one of the most destructive new-ball partnerships in the county's history.

James Kirtley’s departure from Sussex earlier this week caused widespread sadness, for he was a popular figure at Hove, but for new ball partner Jason Lewry there was an extra level of sorrow.

“Like James, I played all my cricket for Sussex and my best memory is of playing alongside him when we won the Championship for the first time ever in 2003. I’m sad to see him go because I know he loves the club, through and through.

“We kept in touch when the playing days were over - only sporadically, which is my fault. I hardly ever get to Hove, because I live out beyond Arundel and it’s about an hour each way. The traffic’s got worse. But when Sussex play at Arundel I always go along and have a chat with JK. I was delighted to see his son, Ollie, play for the club this season.”
