James Kirtley, one of the legendary figures in the history of Sussex cricket, first as player then as coach, will be leaving Hove at the end of the month.

Many supporters will rue his loss as keenly as they regret the departure of many players in recent weeks. Kirtley was a key performer in the Sussex side that won that first, historic championship in 2003.

He formed a crucially important new-ball attack with Jason Lewry and was also vice-captain of the side. ‘Ambi’ also played in the sides that won successive championships in 2006 and 2007 and was man of the match with figures of 5 for 27 when Sussex beat Lancashire in the 2006 NatWest Trophy final.
