Dodgy hotels, iffy umpires, flat pitches and security worries. Life on tour in Pakistan in the 1980s

Things are a lot more comfortable for Sussex's James Coles and the England players than they were 40 years ago as Paul Weaver, who toured there twice, remembers.

Have you been enjoying watching Sussex batsman James Coles play in the three cornered ODI series between England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka? No, nor me.

Following two defeats – and it was a humdinger of a game against Sri Lanka - England must beat Pakistan on Sunday if they are to make the final next weekend. So it’s now or never if they’re going to give Colesy a game.

But, whether he plays or not, I don’t think James will be too worried about his hotel accommodation in Rawalpindi and Lahore, two of the biggest three cities in Pakistan.

It was a combination of dodgy hotels, iffy umpires, flat pitches and security worries that made Pakistan the Gulag Archipelago for many England cricketers and reporters when I toured there in the 1980s, when the likes of Bob Williis and Mike Gatting were captaining.
