George Thomas is the surprise name in Sussex Sharks’ squad as they face two games in three days this weekend which could determine their future in this year’s Vitality Blast.
The 22-year-old has been included in a 14-man squad for Friday’s match against Leicestershire Foxes which is followed on Sunday by another game at Hove, this time against Kent.
Thomas owes his place to three things - a spectacular 82 off 44 balls in a second-team game against Middlesex at Horsham on Monday, the absence of three players on England duty and injuries to key players.
While Ollie Robinson was making a brilliant return to Test cricket at Lord’s on Thursday, James Coles and Henry Crocombe were linking up with England Lions for a three-match 50 overs series against South Africa starting in Leicester on Friday followed by two games in Worcester on Sunday and Tuesday.
