Les Lenham celebrates his 90th birthday on Sunday and when I met the former Sussex opener at his handsome Eastbourne flat recently, I saw a man moving smoothly into his anecdotage.
He will spend the big day enjoying lunch and sinking a pint or two with son Neil, grandsons Archie and Scott and brother Keith at his local, The Pilot in Meads.
Don’t bet against him doing a David Attenborough and moving effortlessly through the normally nervous nineties to achieve a serene century.
There is an older Sussex cricketer. Gordon ‘Gillie’ Potter will be 95 in October. And if I manage to unearth him you will be reading about him in due course.
