It’s no secret that cricket’s demographic is one that can be slightly eye-watering for those from state school backgrounds.
According to a 2026 report, around 70 per cent of professional cricketers in England attended a private school despite only seven per cent of the population going to such institutions.
It’s perhaps no surprise when you consider less than a quarter of non-selective state secondary schools have access to any kind of cricket facility, whether that be a pitch or even a cut strip suitable for bowling, per Sport England.
While this might be disheartening, there is a new source of hope for aspirational cricketers from state schools in Sussex.
