Paul Farbrace has already played a critical role at Sussex this year before a ball is bowled.
The director of cricket is also the best communicator at the club and he has played a vital part around the club and at members’ forums and Q&As in stressing that this season could still be a successful one despite the financial turmoil swirling around Hove.
In most of those forums and interviews Farbrace has hinted that his fourth season in the role might be his last. Eight of his players are out of contract when it finishes and drastic cuts to the playing budget and squad size are almost certain as the county tries to reduce its debts and any new arrivals have to be approved by the ECB.
But don’t rule out the possibility that he will still be here in a year’s time either to begin a rebuilding similar to the one he embarked on when he arrived in 2023 and which has led to Sussex starting 2026 with their strongest squad in years and one he feels is capable of challenging for a trophy this year.
