I won’t spoil the mood among Sussex supporters delighted at seeing their team achieve its best Championship for 12 years by mentioning the one-day performances. That inquest can wait for next week.
I wrote in the wake of Saturday’s victory over Hampshire about the ‘if onlys’ of the season – points deductions, failing to take one more Warwickshire wicket at Edgbaston and the like.
Hove and Away reader Judy Smith made some valid arguments in an email, pointing out that if Sussex had beaten the Bears they would have finished on 211 to Warwickshire’s 209 with the points deduction irrelevant. “What is fact, though, is that the team won 207 points on the pitch. That their committee lost 12 of them doesn’t alter that fact. That would also mean they won two more points on the pitch than Somerset (who finished on 205)."
