Tears and then the beers as Sussex celebrate third-place finish in the County Championship

There were plenty of tears shed in the away dressing room at the Utilita Bowl on Saturday after Sussex ended the season by claiming third place - their best finish for 12 years - with victory over Hampshire.
There were speeches from the likes of head coach Paul Farbrace, batting coach Grant Flower - who is heading to Surrey - as well as players like John Simpson, whose contract won’t be renewed.
Quite how many of the team who won their seventh game of the season - as many as new champions Warwickshire - will be at Hove when the 2027 campaign starts gets underway remains to be seen.
But amidst the tears there was also a realisation that despite all what has happened off the field this year, finishing third is an outstanding achievement by Sussex. And there is still going to be a solid core of 8 or 9 of the players around next year to try and do even better.
