Sussex’s partnership with Oxfordshire has borne fruit over the years with the likes of James Coles and Harrison Ward benefitting from the agreement put in place by Keith Greenfield when he was the county’s performance director back in 2013.

Of course, for every Coles there are other players who don’t make the transition into the professional ranks, but Sussex and Greenfield, these days the club’s head of talent pathway, have high hopes for the latest player hoping to follow in the footsteps of Coles and Ward.

Teenage left-arm spinner Alfie Smethurst will join the county on a one-year rookie contract at the start of next season and already has a solid body of work in red and white-ball cricket to suggest he might have what it takes.
