In these straitened times at Sussex, the news that one of England’s – no, the world’s – best fast bowlers has extended his stay with the county into a second decade ought to have been a cause for rejoicing.

Is it really more than ten years since Jofra Archer burst onto the scene when he gave Pakistan’s finest the hurry-up in a tour match (remember them?) at Hove in July 2016? Less than three years later he was an England player.

A lot has happened to Archer since then, not least a series of injuries which have robbed him of many more England appearances, but one thing which has remained steadfast is his commitment to the county that gave him his opportunity in the first place.
