It’s somehow ironic that it was the untimely death of someone inexorably linked with the last existential event in Sussex cricket, nearly 30 years ago, which fired the starting gun on this new crisis.
Sussex marked Tony Pigott’s death on 2 February on its website with a nice tribute which included the reflections of former captain Chris Adams, who only came to Hove because of Pigott’s persuasive powers.
A few hours later and the website was reporting the extent of ECB’s punishment for the financial mismanagement at the club that had first emerged in January.
Now it is more than likely that ECB and not Sussex decided when that news was released, a few hours after the death of one of the most significant figures in the county’s last 50 years had been reported.
