When all is done at Taunton on Monday – or even before then – it’s unlikely that the verdict on the pitch from any of the players is that it’s the flattest they have ever played on.
Sussex have already encountered two verdant decks on their Championship travels this season at Leicester and The Oval with mixed results. Their hosts on the opening day of the season at Grace Road allowed Sussex to rattle up 154 by lunch and they never looked back. But against Surrey a fortnight ago Sussex found themselves 92-7 during the first morning. It’s hard to win from that position and Sussex duly suffered their only defeat of the season so far.
