John Simpson has been on the county circuit long enough to know when a team looks tired and after two days in the dirt at Taunton he acknowledged that Sussex’s energy levels are pretty low.

This is their fourth successive Championship game and sixth in the past seven weeks, four of which have been away from home and have included long trips to Leicester, Leeds and the west country.

During that time Sussex have only made two changes to their team and eight players have taken part in all six games.
