England Lion Tom Haines is determined to push for his first Test cap by hitting the ground running when he starts his County Championship season at Leicester on Friday.

“Having played for the Lions I’m incredibly determined to make the next step up,” he told Hove and Away. “I’m focused right now on having a good start to the season with Sussex. That’s all I can do to put myself in the running.

“Playing for England’s the ultimate, really. And that’s my main focus for the next 6-8 weeks, to get off to a good start and put some big scores on the board.

“I had a good start last season, struggled a bit in the middle and then got a bit of form back towards the end. Hopefully I can achieve more consistency this season.
