Sussex go into their last three Championship games of the season – starting with Surrey at Hove on Tuesday – with a freedom of spirit they have not enjoyed all season.
Their magnificent 47-run victory over Essex at Chelmsford on Saturday was their fifth of the season (only leaders Somerset have won as many) and was described by director of cricket Paul Farbrace as: “Probably as good a win as I’ve been involved with at Sussex in four years. I’ve never known a team that has enjoyed other people’s success more than this group.”
The 20-point victory buoyed them up to fourth place in the table. They’re still not mathematically safe but at least they can view the Dantean pit of horror below them with a measure of dispassion.
