One-Day cricket review: Why a new approach is needed

Sussex had the worst record of all the counties in the two white-ball competitions. So what are the options open to Matt Walker to change things?

We need to talk about white-ball cricket.

The inquest has been put off long enough because Sussex supporters wanted to enjoy their best finish in the County Championship for 12 years. And rightly so.

If red-ball performances were the only benchmark you could award Sussex an 8 or 8.5 out of 10 for this year’s endeavours. But four wins in 20 matches across the Blast and Metro Bank One-Day Cup was comfortably the worst record of all 18 counties. That brings the mark for 2026 down to 6 or 6.5 if you’re feeling generous and want to recognise the good job Jack Carson did in his first year as captain of the 50 overs team in very difficult circumstances.
