On this evidence Robinson deserves an England call-up

It would harm Sussex, but no one at Hove would begrudge the skipper a Test recall against New Zealand next month.

I felt strangely ambivalent as I watched Ollie Robinson bowl heroically well for Sussex on the opening day of their Rothesay Championship match against Leicestershire at Hove on Friday.

I started the day reading my old colleague Ali Martin in The Guardian. Ali is one of the most respected cricket correspondents on the circuit. And he wrote a piece on Friday saying that Robinson, frozen out of the England Test team since February 2024, could be on the brink of an England recall.
