James Coles makes timely return to form as Sussex close in on crucial victory

History will record Sussex’s first visit to Chelmsford for 26 years as Henry Crocombe’s match after he claimed a hat-trick for the second successive match.
But if Sussex go on to claim a victory that should banish any lingering relegation fears on Saturday in the dressing room at least James Coles’ contribution will not be overlooked.
When Crocombe was laying waste to Essex’s middle and lower order on his way to a five-for Coles quietly backed him up with 3 for 7 at the other end on day two.
Then on Friday he found some form with the bat to score a diligent 79 that helped Sussex compile 230 in their second innings before taking 3 for 65 with his left-arm spinners as Essex closed on 197 for 7, still needing another 131 to win, their hopes resting with Matt Critchley who will resume on 63.
