Sussex’s hopes of competing for the County Championship suffered what might be a terminal blow at Edgbaston where Warwickshire’s Chris Woakes used all his experience to guide the hosts to a one-wicket win on Saturday.
Sussex have now lost back to back games, spanning a two-month gap, and although three of their remaining matches are at Hove, they are against the top two and Surrey, with Somerset the visitors on Thursday.
And with Fynn Hudson Prentice (thigh) adding his name to a lengthening list of injured seamers, director of cricket Paul Farbrace admitted Sussex are down ‘to the bare bones’, although at least Sean Hunt, Henry Crocombe and Jaydev Unadkat will have an extra day’s recovery after the game finished in three days, Woakes hitting the winning runs just past 7pm after there had been 13 deliveries bowled with the scores level following the dismissal of Ethan Bamber.
