It wasn’t so long ago that if a county fancied signing an out of contract player they had to wait until after the season ended before making an approach.
Back in 2006, and a few days after Sussex had just won their second Championship title, skipper Chris Adams was approached by Yorkshire chief executive Stewart Regan as he was crossing the dancefloor on his way to the bar at the PCA Awards dinner. “It was a great place to do a bit of detective work to see who was out of contract and available,” said Adams, who remembered doing the same thing as Regan a few years earlier and landing Tony Cottey from Glamorgan.
