Sussex are in the middle of a financial crisis – I think we can all agree on that.

But one area of the club – the shop window in effect – is in rude health.

Just before Christmas, when director of cricket Paul Farbrace became aware of the extent of the fiscal tsunami about to crash over Sussex’s bows, he already had in place arguably Sussex’s strongest squad for more than a decade.

New signings Tom Price, Dom Goodman and Danny Briggs had all agreed their three-year contracts last June.
