New Sussex Cricket chair Ed Warner has accused the club of being “heroically optimistic” and said that the board had “exerted insufficient oversight” as he looked back on a disastrous financial year.

Warner, the former chair of UK Athletics, was making his first public appearance since his appointment last month and was speaking ahead of the publication of a damning independent governance review of Sussex Cricket by Campbell Tickell which was published on Saturday.

Warner did not pull his punches, much like the report, which called for the board to be replaced - Sussex have already moved in that direction, with the appointment of a number of new directors.
