John Simpson to join Nottinghamshire - the highest-profile casualty of Sussex's financial crisis

Once the seriousness of Sussex’s financial plight became known last winter, with the need to slash the wages bill by £400k, Simpson’s position became vulnerable. He is one of the two highest paid players at the club, along with captain Ollie Robinson.

My co-editor Bruce Talbot predicted Simpson’s departure at the end of July, and even said where he was going: Trent Bridge. Former Sussex coach Peter Moores, himself a wicketkeeper-batsman and now in charge of affairs in Nottingham, has been an admirer of Simpson’s versatile skills for many years.
