Sussex delayed the inevitable until 4pm before a first County Championship defeat of the season was confirmed at The Oval on Monday.
It s almost a given these days that they would not go quietly, even though they began the final day four wickets down and still requiring 188 runs to make Surrey bat again. Paul Farbrace had promised at the end of day three that his team would show resilience, guts and character and they did just that.
