The omission of Tom Alsop is the only surprise in the squad named by director of cricket Paul Farbrace for Sussex’s opening game in the Rothesay County Championship against Leicestershire at Grace Road on Friday.

Alsop had a disappointing 2025, averaging 25.52 despite playing 12 of Sussex’s 14 matches. He failed to score a century with a top score of 82.

Farbrace confirmed it was a cricket decision and not an injury which led to Alsop’s exclusion. Injuries have ruled out Don Goodman and Sean Hunt from the pace attack.

With Jack Leaning arriving in the winter from Kent to offer another top-order option, he and left-hander Tom Clark will battle for a role in the top five.
