The Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign was always going to be a steep learning curve for Sussex’s young players and so it has proved.
The highs of last Wednesday – when the Sharks beat Essex in front an appreciative crowd of around 4,000 – were a far cry from Sunday at Derby, where there wasn’t too much evidence of the boom in attendances for the 50 overs competition which have been experienced by so many counties in the last few weeks.
There were around 1,000 inside the Racecourse Ground – which tends to be a place where players have to make their own atmosphere at the best of times – and it was Peakites who went home happy after their side hammered Sussex.
