Sussex duly beat Berkshire in their T20 warm-up game at Horsham on Wednesday, although at one stage it looked as if they might be upstaged by Berkshire skipper Johnny Connell.
Against a full-strength Sharks attack including Danny Briggs – the Vitality Blast’s leading wicket-taker and skipper Tymal Mills – the 23-year-old blasted 121 from 53 balls at Cricketfield Road, taking advantage of ideal scoring conditions.
It was not enough to save Berkshire from a 49 runs defeat in the showcase match but Connell, who has been on trial with Essex, would have caught the eye of the Sussex coaching staff as he hit 13 fours and eight sixes in a 44-ball century. The next highest score was James Isbell with 17.
Briggs took 4-35 and Fynn Hudson-Prentice 3-36 after Mills had taken 2-24. Danny Lamb took the other wicket.
