A melancholy final day at Hove - but Sussex's future is much brighter than we might have expected

Perhaps the hardest job at Hove on Friday was not the one accomplished by the players who saw off Nottinghamshire to keep Sussex’s hopes of a third-place finish alive.
No, spare a thought for the steward who had to gently corral the supporters sitting in the pavilion and dotted elsewhere around the County Ground towards the exit an hour after the game finished.
Their reluctance to head home was understandable. The 2027 season seems a long way off and for a lot of Sussex supporters those winter months until they can walk up Eaton Road and into the County Ground again are the longest of days.
But they headed through the Tate Gates with smiles on their faces. Few would have predicted back in April after a winter of discontent at Hove which would have put Jim Callaghan to shame that at the end of it Sussex have a chance of bettering last season’s fourth place in the County Championship.
