Tom Haines owes it to Sussex supporters. He owes it to batting coach Grant Flower, with whom he has worked for almost five years. Most of all, perhaps, he owes it to himself.
On Saturday morning Haines must score the one run that will bring him his 16th first-class century, and the first in what has been a disappointing season. Six times he has passed fifty but, ridiculously, he had a summer’s highest score of just 67 before Friday.
Sussex finished the second day of their last County Championship match of the season, against Hampshire in Southampton, in a dominant position. At 216 for five they lead by 332 runs. And acting captain Haines is 99 not out.
