If Ollie Robinson had a day to remember at The Oval on Friday then Jack Carson’s wasn’t too shabby either.
A second first-class hundred in front of 5,500 spectators – almost certainly the biggest crowd he has played Championship cricket in front of – with his brother Ben watching from his flat overlooking the crowd, the Ulster flag fluttering on the balcony.
A year after his maiden hundred against Worcestershire, Carson’s 105 and his stand of 173 for the ninth wicket with Robinson utterly transformed the first day after Surrey had reduced Sussex to 92 for 7 before lunch. You would have got odds as big as the Oval gasometer on Sussex being able to declare a few hours later.
