It’s only May 2 but at stumps on Saturday Sussex had already played a quarter of their County Championship season.
And director of cricket Paul Farbrace thinks that the second day against Surrey at The Oval was the first where they had not been anywhere close to their best.
Fortunately, they are not out of the game, although the hosts are in a strong position after only losing two wickets and closing to within 66 of Sussex’s 358 for 9 dec thanks to an unbeaten 116 by opener Dom Sibley, his sixth century since the start of last season.
