If Richard Montgomerie had lived in wartime he might have won a posthumous VC.
Even Monty’s nickname evokes thoughts of great military deeds, though the famous field marshal’s name ended with a ‘y’. Monty, our Monty, opened the batting for Sussex a generation ago and faced down the fastest bowlers of his time. And, braver still, he fielded at Boot Hill, otherwise known as short leg.
