'We all had the same goals - and it was a special time': Richard Montgomerie looks back to 2003

Even Monty’s nickname evokes thoughts of great military deeds, though the famous field marshal’s name ended with a ‘y’. Monty, our Monty, opened the batting for Sussex a generation ago and faced down the fastest bowlers of his time. And, braver still, he fielded at Boot Hill, otherwise known as short leg.

You have to be either very courageous or as daft as a brush to field there. And there is nothing daft about Richard, who was educated at Rugby School, Worcester College and Oxford University and currently teaches chemistry at Eton College.
