John Snow at 85: 'I would have played more now because of the way the game is run...'

One of England and Sussex's finest will quietly celebrate on Tuesday with a family meal and a round of golf. But he can still come off his long run when assessing the current state of fast bowling.

12.10.26, 19:59 3 Minute Read

John Snow turns 85 on Tuesday but the outline of the great fast bowler is still in place. The broad, still-strong shoulders, the flat stomach, the narrow hips and the muscular legs which suggest, a little eerily, that his body might be as immortal as the memories it created.

The face, too, remains defiantly handsome and he still has a full head of hair – even if its colour might make you ask yourself whether you’re talking to John Snow or Snow White.

He is not quite as imperishable as he looks. There was a brush with cancer two years ago and he lost a little weight, since regained. And a pacemaker has been fitted. So even though he looks capable of one more deadly reprise – perhaps bowling downhill for three or four overs - he will spend his birthday lunching with cricket pals, followed by a family function in the evening.
