Jack Carson should open the batting for Sussex next season. That’s the opinion of Dermot Reeve, one of the brightest and most original thinkers seen in domestic cricket over the past half-century.
Former Sussex all-rounder Reeve captained Warwickshire to six trophies in two seasons, including an unprecedented three titles in 1994 – it was almost four but they lost to Worcestershire in the NatWest Trophy final, arguably on the toss of a coin.
Carson faced just 37 balls in making 12 runs during Sussex’s agonising one-wicket defeat by Warwickshire at Edgbaston on Saturday. But after 22 of those deliveries Reeve had already made up his mind.
