Why is the England and Wales Cricket Board picking on Sussex? That’s the question I’ve been asked by so many supporters in recent weeks.

And now Rod Bransgrove, Hampshire’s dynamic former chairman, has joined their angry number.

Sussex were put in special measures by the game’s governing body in February after announcing losses of £1.33m. They were also hit by a points deduction across all three competitions, losing 12 in the County Championship and one each in the white-ball tournaments.

The tightness of the straitjacket imposed by the ECB became clear to members at the last month’s AGM when they were told that new signings and salary spending would have to be approved by the governing body.
