Some people might attribute Sussex’s impressive recent victories over Leicestershire and Warwickshire to the luck brought to them by their new mascot.
Only Charlie Tear is not a mascot. He is one of the most talented cricketers on the Sussex staff and his presence in the squad for the opening two County Championship games – even though he was never likely to play – is a reflection of how highly he is considered by the club’s management.
Tear, 21, is a gifted batsman and wicketkeeper, even though his physique suggests he might be more gainfully employed bringing home the winner of the 2.30 at Epsom Downs.
