On Saturday night, in a packed Long Room at Hove, Sussex Cricket rose as one to acclaim the legend of “The Bodster.”

Some people claim that Samuel Pickwick is the most popular of the cornucopia of characters created by Charles Dickens, a jolly, genial old gent who was the founder and general chairman of the Pickwick Club.

Well, in Rob Boddie Sussex have their own Mr Pickwick, the most popular man at Hove, ruddy-faced and always cheerfully friendly, a picture of beery bonhomie, of humorous mischief and eager helpfulness, a personality of true Dickensian richness and roundness.

“Sussex cricket might not have a lot of money, but one thing we do have is people,” said director of cricket Paul Farbrace, as he introduced Rob to say a few words.
