Have you been giving much thought to Sussex’s seven-wicket win over Lancashire in the 1986 NatWest Trophy final?
No, nor me. But it occurred to me the other day that it was 40 years ago, almost to the week, that Ian Gould’s side beat Clive Lloyd’s in the premier one-day competition of the day, won by Sussex on five occasions.
It’s all part of me trying to get into a winning mentality as Sussex go into their final six Championship matches of the season with a real chance of winning it.
Those early Gillette Cup wins under the inspiring leadership of Ted Dexter in 1963 (when the players were given a £5 bonus for their efforts) and 1964 have become part of the club’s DNA. “We did much better in 1964,” said Kenny Suttle. They gave us £7 and ten shillings!”
